Must-See Before Playing

Agar.io is the original .io game, where you control a simple agar cell and aim to become the largest in a competitive multiplayer arena. Avoid larger cells and consume smaller ones to grow your size.

This is a straightforward game about making your single-cell organism larger than other players. Our family enjoys it because there’s a surprising amount of strategy and cooperation involved. You have to assess whether you\'re bigger or smaller than other players. A favorite tactic for our youngest is hiding behind virus cells. Most rewarding, however, is when you split your cell to give another player a chance to grow, often signaling a collaborative effort. We\'ve had extended games where we team up with others, hunting together. It’s a great way to practice teamwork.

How to Play

The game has two basic rules:

  1. Only consume smaller cells to grow.
  2. Avoid larger cells, as they will eat you.

Navigate the Agario battlefield as a single cell striving to evolve. Think of it like survival – don’t just avoid bigger cells, go for the smaller ones and grow by consuming them!

Collect smaller blobs and eat other players to grow in size. Steer clear of bigger cells, as they can destroy you, but you can always restart and aim for a better score next time.

Game Modes

Agar.io features four game modes:

  • FFA (Free For All) – A free-for-all where everyone competes individually.
  • Battle Royale – A last-player-standing mode within a shrinking arena.
  • Teams – Two teams battle against each other.
  • Experimental – A mode where players can donate their mass to gain more bits in return.

About Agar.io

Launch

Agar.io was first introduced by Matheus Valadares on 28 April 2015 via 4chan. At the time, Matheus was a 19-year-old developer from Brazil, and he created the game in just a few days using JavaScript and C++. Initially, there was no official name, and users had to connect directly to Valadares\' IP address to play.

The game was later named \"Agar.io\" by an anonymous 4chan user, and within a week, it had entered Steam Greenlight for further development.

Initial Reviews

At first, the feedback was mixed. Many praised the game\'s simple mechanics and enjoyed how it represented the competition for survival at a microscopic level. However, some criticized its repetitive nature and the controls of the mobile version. Tom Christiansen from Gamezebo mentioned that the game failed to capture his attention and felt overly repetitive.

The Success of the Game

Despite the mixed early reviews, Agar.io quickly became a phenomenon, largely due to its viral spread on social media and broadcasts on platforms like Twitch.tv and YouTube. Within the first week, the mobile app was downloaded over ten million times. In 2015, Agar.io became the most searched game on Google and ranked as the fifth most popular game on YouTube. Interestingly, it was also featured in the Netflix series *House of Cards*!
